After years I have discovered the perfect answer to the paranoid nutters who stress about what will or will not work in the street."I just do it for fun"One of the other dads at the school has just started RBSD and constantly wants to discuss the merits of various skills. I'm getting bored with it at 0855 so "I just do it for fun" took the wind right out of his sails. Gary

That he did. Tried to quiz me again tonight but I just changed the subject a bit sharpish.
I can honestly say that I never asked myself questions about will it / won't it in my early training - no one did - we just did as we were told and worked really hard. All of a sudden, it clicked.
Youtube has got a lot to answer for, people look too deeply these days for a magic answer instead of just doing the graft. Same with weights, same with KB's and definitely with SP.

I wonder what would happen if a Sensei of a different caliber were to say that to a parent of the dojo.

Interesting one ... I strongly believe kids have got to enjoy it. They then feel motivated to attend and if we praise effort rather than over-correcting them eventually the good ones get strong. So FUN has to be part of it. Gary

So FUN has to be part of it. I'll remind you of that when you are being Sensei Evil. ;D

I agree 110% and that's the problem of a past stigma associated to Karate.
The job of the first instructor is to impart fun and joy for training.
Apparently some people have not gotten the memo and still believe having fun in Karate is not allowed. It must be trained serious.

Fair point well made.
Describing 'true' karate is like describing 'real' music. Which is best? Classical or Rap? Country or Reggae? Folk or Jazz?
Bottom line? The one you enjoy.
