This log is begun in hopes that it becomes a sort of writer's cramp therapy. I already log my training on paper, but usually not until the weekend, which results in some loss of detail and pain in the hand. Hopefully I'll be motivated enough to log here everyday, and avoid the loss of detail and any cramps born of typing too much. 7/29/13 My training began with some solo Kyokushin practice at my training spot back in my neighbor's forest. I ran all of the following kata twice, once slowly, and once at full intensity: Taikyoku 1 through 3, Pinan 1 through 5, Gekisai Dai, Yantsu, Tsuki No, Tensho, Saifa, and Sanchin. I followed my kata practice with syllabus practice, running all syllabus from 10th kyu to 1st kyu twice over. I concluded this session with practice of Renraku, running each 10 times from the 9th one to the 12th. After dinner, weight training: Pull Ups 4x10 Dumbell Rows 3x8 Dumbell Shrugs 3x8 Shoulder Press 3x8 Incline Press 3x8 Straight Bar Curls 3x8 To conclude the day, I practiced kata in my back yard after it had become dark. I ran Gekisai Dai, Yantsu, Tsuki No, and Tensho once each. As I have just recently learned Saifa, I ran it 4 times, and finished with a single run of Sanchin. I must note that I am currently not working, due to my plant being on it's annual maintenance shut-down. I will resume working 40+ hours per week on 8/12/13, and will not have as much time to train outside of the dojo as I do now. Nonetheless, I do plan to continue taking advantage of my free time in hopes of improving my skills as far as I can training by myself in the woods.

That's quite a bit of work... good on ya! Altogether, about 3.5 hours. The early Kyokushin practice was around 2 hours, the weight training a little better than 1 hour, and the night kata about 0.5 hour. Not bad for a day where I didn't work or go to the dojo, but I feel I could have done more had I managed my time a bit better. 7/30/13 Again, my training began with solo Kyokushin practice in the forest. This time I focused only on the higher level syllabus, running from 5th kyu to 1st kyu uncounted times. My goal was increased fluidity of movement. This session lasted approx' 1.5 hours. After Dinner it's off to the dojo. My instructor had an appointment in a city over an hour away around the same time, so instrcution was left to me. With the kids, we played a little dodge-ball, then ran all lower rank syllabus and renraku, breaking for push ups and leg lifts. After that, we split into two groups and I continued the practice of syllabus ad renraku with the higher ranks, while a fellow adult student took the lower ranks and practiced the taikyoku katas. We ended the class with a little "Bet on Vocabulary" game I created, where the students bet an amount of a physical exercise to give to another student or do themselves according to whether they get the answer correct or not. As for the adults, lower rank syllabus was run in group, then we split into two groups. The lower ranks ran taikyoku and pinan katas, while the the higher ranks ran the higher rank syllabus. The class was ended with some basic footwork drills; stepping forward, backward, and to the side in both left and right stance, then doing the same footwork with a 3 punch combo included. I concluded the day with a good stretch, which is something I need to be sure to do everyday, not just when I feel like it, as stretching is my arch-nemesis lol.

7/31/13 Training began today after going to the dojo a few hours early. A fellow karateka and I practiced the higher rank syllabus forms repetitively, seeking increased fluidity of movement and muscle memory. This session lasted a little better than an hour. Next was weight training: Bench Press - 6 sets increasing weight 5% each set, with reps starting at 6 and decreasing to 1. Dumbell Kickbacks - 3x8 Close Grip Bench - 3x8 Weighted Push Ups - 3x10 After finishing weight training, in dojo training began. As summer camp is fast approaching, all rank requirements are being practiced, but tonight the focus was on kyu rank syllabus and renraku. The repetition was broken up by burpees, leg lifts, and jump-squats at random points throughout the training. After dinner, and relaxing a bit, I decided to go outside for some kata and syllabus practice. Tonight, I started as the sun was setting and practiced into night. Gekisai Dai, Yantsu, Tsuki No, Tensho, Saifa, and Sanchin were all ran twice, with one run of the 2nd and 1st kyu syllabus in between each run of a kata. On a different note, I found this article yesterday. I'll be giving it a shot today, and will let you all know how it goes. KaratebyJesse - Improve Your Flexibility by 39% in Eight Seconds

I like your training spot- a neighbor's forest. How cool is that!

My favorite book on stretching is Scientifically Stretching by Tom Kurz.
He covers PNF in there but he more advocates Dynamic Stretching for Martial Artists.

@ Meguro: I am blessed to have a very nice neighbor who doesn't mind me taking advantage of the solitude his property is able to provide. I was going to include a photo, but it appears I will need to create an account on a hosting site to do so, or at least my limited technological knowledge leads me to believe so. @mmx: Thanks for the advice. I will look into anything that has helped others with my most hated part of martial arts/fitness. 8/1/13 Forest training began a bit earlier than usual, and lasted for about 2.5 hours. I focused mostly on kakato kake geri, chusoku kake geri, and kakato ushiro mawashi geri, seeking more fluidity of movement. The intensity was not very high as I was focusing more on performing good techniques as much as possible. I included random practice of the 1st kyu syllabus, 1st dan syllabus, and 1st dan renraku, which include these kicks. At the dojo, I spent kids class practicing the same kicks I was practicing early in the day. Adult's class was much like the day before, except the all syllabus were practiced in moving forms, which is the same techniques done in line drills. The renraku were recited again, but tonight the extra exercises were not included. 8/2/13 No forest training today as my legs were quite sore from the day before. The moving syllabus really took it out of me apparently, and today is legs day on the weights. Weight training: Squats - 3x8 Seated Leg Press - 3x8 Weighted Lunges - 3x8 Weighted Calf Raises - 3x15 Dojo training was a fun surprise tonight, all tameshiwari! I broke some wood with seiken, hiji, mawashi geri, mae geri, and a headbutt lol. The best part was my instructor breaking out the blocks. I got to break one with hiji, and one with shuto. It was a satisfying first experience with breaking blocks. Coming home after dinner, I decided to practice a bit before calling it a day, though my legs will most likely punish me tomorrow for it. I ran Gekisai Dai, Yantsu, Tsuki No, Tensho, and Saifa kata once each, with the 1st kyu and 1st dan syllabus in between each kata. Not the most technical of days, but I enjoyed it nonetheless (probably due to the tameshiwari xD). PS: Jesse's stretching technique didn't do anything for me, sad times.

I was going to include a photo, but it appears I will need to create an account on a hosting site to do so, or at least my limited technological knowledge leads me to believe so. I find www.PhotoBucket.com to be a good photo hosting site, If you have a Facebook account you can use that. Alternatively Windows SkyDrive is also good, if you've got a windows live account (I think a Hotmail account will do) then you can use that.

The best (or worst depending on how you look at it) thing about sky drive is because it's a Microsoft thingy, it works seamlessly with Windows 8.

PS: Jesse's stretching technique didn't do anything for me, sad times. Keep at it. PNF, I believe the method is called, works best for me with standing straddle stretches, touch your toes, and gyaku seiza. Front split stretches from a standing position also work with PNF. Sitting down and extending your legs to stretch doesn't work for me.

Saturday saw no workout due to my company picnic. It was an all day event at an amusement park a couple hours from home. Sunday is my rest day, and it was spent researching workout and stretching techniques.
8/5/13
The early hours of the day were spent building a new workout that I will begin the week following Summer Camp. I have been doing my current weight training program for about 2 months, so it's time to change it up.
After dinner, I ventured back to the forest to practice the various forms to get the as smooth as possible for Summer Camp. The following kata were run twice each, excpet Saifa, which was run 6 times in total, with a syllabus form and renraku in between each kata: Pinan 1-5, Gekisai Dai, Yantsu, Tsuki No, Tensho, and Saifa x3. This took around 2 hours.
I'm itching to begin my new workout schedule, as my research has led me to believe it will be much more effective than what I am doing now. I want to thank the members of this forum for the information and links to further information they have posted, which has helped me immensely in the development of me new schedule.
