Being flexable...
Myself, 33 years old, trained for 5+ years. More flexable than i was but ill never do the box splits or side splits in full. I stretch every session but i'm not going to ever be able to do the splits
My friend. 33 years old, who is hypermobile in his genetic make up from birth and has been stretching since the age of 7 and can do a variaty splits and kicks with ease. He dosent even have to stretch or practise them as he is permantly flexable.
I also put this down to stretching when younger, when your bones are still soft and have not formed/hardended properly giving the advantage for flexability later on in life.
So is flexabilty a genetic make up or does it come from practice??? at any age?
---------
If i new then what i know now... from my mates experiences being able to do the splits on demand, it attracts so many women!!!!!

I was really flexible as a teenager, due to all the gymnastics I did. Sadly, now I'm not!
I think most people can get pretty flexible with a dedicated, regular stretching programme.
BTW, are you sure you will never be able to do box splits? Apparently the test is to stand and put one leg on a chair or table that gives you a right angle to your standing leg. If you can do that on both sides, you can potentially do box splits.

There are different methods to get flexible. Tom Kurz covers every angle in his book/video for Scientifically Stretching. www.stadion.com/stretching_scientifically.htmlI am a lot more flexible now because of this book then I was when I started Karate. Osu!

I was doing a yoga video once and the guy was freakishly flexable, grossly so. While he was in this very odd posistion, he explained that yes he had practiced lots to get flexable, but that he also had genetics. That his hip bones were shaped more openly so that it allowed his legs to move like that. Some people may never be able to do a full split because of bone structure. He also went to say that most people can get to do a split, but no more than that.
I got really flexible by doing the insanity program and that was not what it was about. I think it was a side effect. In that program you do a circuit of warm ups, each cardio exercise for 30 seconds, 5 exercises. Repeat twice more, each set with more effort. Than when all the muscles were all warm, the instructor had us do 7 minutes of stretches. I found after the first month I could put my elbows on the floor while trying to do a split and I could kick higher.

I've never found anyone I couldn't kick in the face but I'm crap at side splits after damage caused in my youth. I wouldn't worry too much. I use Kurz methods as well. Dynamic before training, relaxed after training, PNF as part of my strength routine. Gary

Just buy a pair of Chuck Norris's stretchy jeans and you'll instantly be able to do the splits also the most devastating ushiro mawashi geri known to man. Its all in the jeans. Sorted.

I thought I'd reached my maximum flexibility in my early 30's but some major health issues put my training on hold for a few years. When I got back into it I looked into different methods of training and I'm now more flexible at 44 than I ever have been in my life.

When I really worked at it I got close to full splits, but I was a few inches away. I can't do side splits right now but if i worked at it again I'm sure I could. However, I have no problem landing a jodan mawashi geri or any jodan level kick against most people I have sparred so I don't worry about it as much as I used to. Osu!
