I love that story doing the rounds on FB at the moment. A 73 year old ex boxer dropped an armed burglar in his 20's. Great for us old guys to read but let's look a little deeper: 1) He trained in a sport 2) 50 years later he remembered what to do So I love that. I got bored years ago arguing about what would or wouldn't work for self-defence, but his story shows that basic and brutal sport skills can be retained and applied (with a bit of backbone) in later life. I can see how that ingrained training would just stay with you. I mean you learn to ride a bike and never really forget even if years go by.

I think a lot have been seduced by the 'reality' brigade that poor scorn on mere sport and make money by preaching that skills fade so you need regular and expensive coaching. The story above seems to disprove that. Boxing has rules so it's a sport, but the burglars eye and jaw obviously didn't know sport doesn't work for real violence. I also doubt the old guy went to the gym, paid fees or renewed his licence to keep his hand in. He just trained hard enough to make his skills effective and instinctive. In his hour of need his body remembered what to do. Fair play to him. Gary

Phew, I'm glad the old guy's skills didn't desert him - the burglar had a knife so it could have been a much sadder story.

I'm no world champion, but like many of us, when I finally grew out of being a boy and focused more on the basic skills, I became much better at kumite. Like Milkman said, it's like riding a bike...sure you might not be as fast at riding a bike, and be able to do the tricks you used to do, but you can still ride the damn bike! Osu!
