Has anyone ever been up for a grading and not wanted to test?
I have been a shodan for 10 years, but for 7 of those I was not training. I joined the Army 3 weeks after earning my shodan and went to serve for those years. I have been training hard and recently fought in my first knockdown tournament. My Sensei's are insisting I test for my nidan in a few months and I just don't want to do it. I have the knowledge, the skill, and the heart, but I just don't care about the number of stripes on my belt. (and I just got the shodan broken in the way I like it, I don't want a new stiff belt.)
Has anyone been in this situation before?

So far I have not but when one of my Senpai was asked to grade to Sandan he was very hesitant. I think if your Sensei thinks you are ready he has that confidence in your abilities.

I don't doubt my abilities, I could just care less about actually doing a grading to advance. I would stay a shodan forever as far as I am concerned. The knowledge is what matters to me, not the number of yellow stripes on my belt.

That is what our Sensei does Wullie or you can get a new one if you want. I took the second stripe on my 1st belt. Already broken in.

The belt doesn't make the fighter.
I have never wanted to grade just wanted to keep up with the good fighters.

I don't have any stripes on my black belts as you should be able to walk into my Dojo and know who are the more senior Karateka, not by the stripes on their belts

No need for anyone to wear anything other than a white belt then, surely?

I've had ample time to consider and reconsider things I was doing and teaching.
One thing I immediately did on leaving Enshin was start wearing a plain black belt. It didn't feel right to wear my Enshin belt if I wasn't part of that group. Now we're back I was happy to put it back on.
I think short term motivational goals all feed the monster called 'progress' so consider a belt system has far more advantages that disadvantages.
When the day comes that someone in our club has more stripes than me, I'll be delighted for them.
