I wonder if the ones in headgear are more willing to take a blow. I've had similar thoughts about the RBSD crowd who practise in suits of padding. Does it subconciously lead to a lack of evasive movement?
By contrast if pain is the teacher, there's a real incentive to get the head and feet moving.

Gary, I think so. Pain is the motivator.
In Bogu Kumite the mask absorbs so much of the blow. I started opening up and was willing to trade overhands and hooks with people I shouldn't. You evade like a brick in that gear too. No scratches or bloody noses, but wonder about the effect on the brain? I guess it's good they don't spar very often like that.

Sounds about right. Strange how that works. I wonder what the American Football injuries were before modern gear? They are getting hurt pretty bad now.

I'm not expert, but I believe the mask doesn't do much for the brain bouncing off the inside of the skull. It mostly just helps the pain level and superficial wounds.

From what I understand, headgear reduces certain punch accelerations and force. On the other hand it increases the size of the target. If it also makes the boxer more willing to take a blow, any skillful and creative defensive techniques are less likely to be used. If headgear is encouraging headshots and discouraging ring generalship then I would say that it's not surprising that it actually does the very opposite of what it was introduced to do.

If you think boxing headgear is bad for you, you can imagine how much worse the Kudo space helmet can be.

Head gear increases the size of the target area and when hit causes more centrifugal force inside the skull, also as already said folk are more willing to take the hit when it doesn't hurt as much
