I've watched a lot of youtube recently for examples of footwork.
I'm a bit saddened by how self-congratulatory some are. Far from posting to show knockdown as a test of character, some seem simply to want to raise their own reputation. Worst of the lot are those that poor scorn on defeated opponents.
Such comments form a reputation all right, but not the type you'd ever want.
Of course times change, but in the first few tournaments we all respected each other and congratulated winners and losers alike. It was a shared experience that often ended with a beer and friendship after we'd try to knock each other over.
I'd hate to see knockdown go the way of some combat sports, with disrespectful behaviour before or after events. Let's remember to look beyond the result. It takes guts to even enter.

Unfortunately the internet is full of tough guys who never actually trained or who hide behind their monitors at their mothers house playing video games.

I save my scorn for kata videos. But, I get your point Gary. It is much easier to be dismissive, especially from the comfort of home and the security of ignorance. I've been hankering to create my own videos. One day I will and I hope I won't have to disable comments. Karma is a b****.

Youtube has pushed towards the use of google+ names which are real names attached to user comments. There was a study about the quality of message boards and comments with real user names that cleaned up with foul language and insults but the use of names dissuades free speech and no matter how offensive eliminates some angles of topics. It's almost like group think. "Like". "Thumb up". Etc.
I try to refrain from reading any comments attached to videos or blogs, unless I want a chuckle. I prefer the established message board format because then I can tune out posters that have a long time history of trolling or just bad advice.
I don't mind posting my name either, although I do like my martial art habit kept secret lest I am assaulted by "hi-yah" hand waving as I turn a corner in the office.

There was a study about the quality of message boards and comments with real user names that cleaned up with foul language and insults but the use of names dissuades free speech and no matter how offensive eliminates some angles of topics. Technically known as deindividuation, I think. On the positive side it makes minority groups more likely to express their opinion and can promote active involvement. On the other hand it's more likely to encourage threat, insult and defamation. Anonymity also makes it more likely that an individual has reduced self-awareness and will behave in a manner they would not do if they were identifiable. I can see both sides but my feeling is if you are going to post something that you would not ordinarily say to someone, you should probably have a good, hard think before posting it. As for trash talk in sport (or anywhere), I hate it. Denigrating your opponent before or after the contest speaks volumes about someone, I think. While of course it's fantastic to win, I think there should be some assumed responsibility to be a good winner and have respect for any of your opponents.

This is funny reenactment of actual youtube comments
Just makes me appreciate places like KDfighters.com, so glad it's not gone the way of Sherdog.
