Gym dayTo bring back some discipline into my diet, I have decided to lose a stone in the next 3 months. I'll record my progress here weekly as everyone was really encouraging and I found it really motivating last time. Watch this space. Good work! You can lose a stone easy peasy if you put your mind to it. I'll help. Just bring all baking to our house and I'll have my small army eat it for you Gary Oi! Not all the baking! What am I meant to eat?

Last night we did some bench presses: 6 @ 75% of 1RM, 3 @ 85% and 2 @ 95%. Today was the usual Saturday sweat-fest. Don't listen to Gary if he says it was an easy one - he tells lies! We started off with 3 minutes on the heavy bags doing any combinations, then 2 minutes with increased intensity and finally 1 minute, all interspersed with about 30 seconds jogging. Still on the bags and this time we were taking it in turns to go all out for 10 seconds (the timing designed to keep our fast-twitch muscle fibres working) - first, punching with left leg forwards, then right leg forward, then left and right mawashi geris. Rinse and repeat. We followed this up with some more work on sune uke. Firstly blocking any low kick, then adding in 2 punches, then pushing away and punching and finally punching and kicking. Then we did some conditioning work (am I a mentalist for liking this ;D). 2 low kicks followed by 2 punches. Monty said my punches were accurate and hard, which I was really pleased about because there was loads more in the tank! We moved on to doing some takedown work (under threat of 10 burpees if anyone blocked a low kick with their hands). My head seemed to go a bit blank at this point and I turned into a bit of a pudding . Finishing with an old favourite of a Tabata but in reverse, so 10 seconds work followed by 20 seconds rest. Sprints interspersed with hand-clap press-ups and jump squats. Explosive exercises for maximum benefit. Apart from the one little blip I really enjoyed today's session and feel great now!

Finishing up feeling great is so much more positive than simply beasting yourselves. Most people use discomfort as their yardstick for a good session but feeling energised is a far better one. No-one blocked a low-kick with their hands today, so that's very encouraging! Gary

Sounds great.
Now you will have to test that Sune Uke in free Kumite.
I find after a bit of practice that just comes naturally.
Osu!

Yes, I need to try and lift my leg a bit higher too. Monty's shin doesn't like kicking into my knee, apparently. ;D

Big, sweaty pig of a gym session!
Starting off with the 10 second 100% drill:
Left leg forward punching Right leg forward punching Left leg mawashi geri Right leg mawashi geri
1 minute of hitting whatever pads were held up for
1 minute mawashi geri/ushiro mawashi kake geri (right/left) 1 minute mawashi geri/ushiro mawashi kake geri (left/right)
We decided to do several 1 minute rounds (alternating sides) of just trying to get the hips over for mawashi geri into a pad.
We spent a little time trying to go over the sweeps from yesterday but stopped quite quickly as there were some bits we weren't sure we were doing right!
About 5 minutes of alternating attack/defense with takedown.
Yellow belt kata, to the count and then with pads.
Finally a reverse tabata to finish - alternating sprints with hand-clap press-ups and jump squats (still can't touch the ceiling!).

Dojo TrainingAfter a good warm-up we moved onto kihon. 10 or 20 reps of strikes and blocks and then 30 of most of the kicks. Green belts and above stayed up to do mawashi geri, ushiro mawashi geri from kumite no kamae. Then we partnered up to do gi grab and mawashi geri. Then 3 punches, hiki mawashi, hiza geri. The final combination was 3 punches but then the final move was dependant upon your partner's actions; if they moved away it was the grab and mawashi geri, if they came in close, it was the hiki mawashi and hiz geri. kata was next. Every kata in turn: in chunks, no count then a slow white belt to the count so that the newer members could follow along. Pads came out (yay!), time to do 1 minute hitting whatever the padmen gave you. Got a tip from Sensei Paul that Monty and I can use when we do this exercise - attacker must immediately put hands up after attack or they get whacked with the pads. We did a few rounds of lower grade attacks for 30 secs, then higher grade, then alternating attacks and then we finished off with some conditioning work: 30 press-ups, 30 sit-ups, then squat kicks. I think Sensei Evil said 'final 10' about 4 times! I managed almost all of them though. My t-shirt was about ready to wring out by the time I got home tonight - good session.

Dojo trainingThe very first thing after the warm-up was everyone's favourite playing card exercise. You know what this is by now - different suits = different exercises, luckily only about 5 minutes worth! We moved onto kata, again with the playing cards, staying up if you knew the kata called. It was all no count, so fairly fast and furious. We then moved on to doing kata with an opponent. There was a good mix of black belts to lower grades tonight, so we did the kata of our choice against several different people. I did 3 green belt kata and 2 yellow belt kata and I'm actually quite pleased with the progress I have made with these two kata. Then we did one of our 'Saturday' exercises. Two people in the middle facing a stream of attackers. Each person stayed in the middle for 1 minute. Finally, we did some light sparring. I think we did 5 rounds. Fun. I say finally, I lied! A bit of conditioning at the end. For me it was one armed press-ups (!) followed by one-legged squats. The squats were much better than the press-ups! Great class, as sweaty as ever with just the one or two war wounds!

I know every class is what the individual gives, but having a few more sweaty bodies seems to get the less-than-100-percenters raising their game. Gary

The sun is shining and it seemed like a great opportunity to get the mats out and have some fun in the garden. We warmed up with some jogging, dynamic stretches, high knees, kick-ups and then spent a while on kicks. The usual ones at the moment; mawashi geri/ushiro mawashi kake geri. To try and improve the mawashi geri (seems to do a bit of a crescent kick almost), I was kicking it slowly into the pad. All good...until my head said 'OK, now do both kicks' and it went back to straight leg! My right leg is best for the ushiro mawashi kake geri and it actually feels quite good. The left leg definitely feels inferior but I can't see it so I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. After several minutes of that we did some hand clap press-ups and table top sit-ups. Then back to the legs and we just did a couple of minutes of whacking mawashi geris into the pads - just because it's fun! We did a minute each of laying into whatever the padman gave you to hit/kick and we rounded it all off with a minute of burpee then left, right mawashi geri. Unfortunately for Monty, after 30 seconds his phone rang so I made him do another minute after the phone call. Hee hee. ;D

Dojo trainingWe have a promotion test coming up a week on Thursday, so tonight was another sweaty pig of a session. We started off with kihon strikes and blocks. Just 10 of each but as hard as possible. For the kicks we partnered up and took it turns to offer a target while the other kicked and then vice versa. Except me as there was an odd number, so I did twice as much as everyone else with Sensei Gary giving me a target for the first lot and then doing the second set without a target or using the wall bars...which is where an interesting discovery was made: while holding onto the wall bar, my mae keage was quite good. Ergo balance is the issue and not flexibility. (can't believe I just got the word 'ergo' into a training log! ;D) After the kihon we moved onto kata, working from black belt kata down to white belt kata. First of all to the count, then in chunks and then no count. Then we did kata partnering one of the black belts - I did green belt, then yellow belt, then green belt. Pretty knackered by now, so it was time for some sparring. We did maybe eight or nine rounds, with some Sensei Evil burpees towards the end. When we have been sparring for a while and everyone is knackered, it seems to give me a bit more energy if I can see my partner looks really knackered. I always think to myself, 'now if I can just raise my game a little bit, I'll have 'em!' Moral of today's training: however knackered you are, there's always a little more left in the tank.

Sounds good Ros. Burpee's after sparring? Wow. That tops me lol!! ;D Not quite, Burpees during sparring! Gary wanted to stop people talking to their opponents during the round so if he heard someone talk the rest of the minute was burpees for everyone Then an extra round was added on! I get the feeling that if he hadn't heard anyone talking then he would have asked someone a question and then, when they answered him, gone "Right, Burpees for answering !" ;D

LOL You know me so well ... If it's 'developmental' sparring I'm happy with the black belts pointing stuff out and giving tips as it happens, but if it's leading up to testing the social chatter and smiling has to cease. Regards the burpees; no matter how tired you feel you can always find a bit extra if you get the mind strong and just crack on. It was pleasing to watch last night, everyone got stuck in and no-one started moaning (no matter how unjust it seemed) One day you'll thank me. (Today is not that day and tomorrow's not looking good either ) Gary
