That was a really gritty performance Ros and I'm really proud of you. Keep it up! Gary

Oh cool! So you got to grade and also there was a Shodan grading. That is always a good session!

Well finally, a write-up from me! Dojo TrainingWarm-up Kihon strikes, blocks, kicks x 10 From kumite no kamae; front then reverse punch 20 times with right leg forward and repeated with left leg forward. Special attention paid to getting low down on the reverse punch so that the next punch added in (shovel) had extra power. Still from fighting stance; front mae geri, back mae geri x 20 off each leg and then front mae geri and back mawashi geri. Just to make sure we were sweaty at this point, the playing cards came out and we either did jump squats, tuck jump burpees, pike sit-ups or hand-clap press-ups. Then we got into threes in front of a padman to work on our grade kata with an opponent. We each did each move in turn 5 times, if we weren't up working we were either doing press-ups or squats. The final exercise was firstly with the black belts. There was a pad holder for each black belt - the black belt closed their eyes and got spun round several times, the padman then gave them a shove and they had to quickly react by whacking whatever was given to them. After a few repeats of this, the black belts took over the pads while the rest of us stood with our eyes closed and waited for a shove! Quite nerve-wracking with anticipation. OK, that's what everyone else did. As I can't kick at the moment I tried to substitute something else for the kicks and I also had to substitute some of the exercises for others. I don't mind though, as I'm just glad to be back training!

Didn't go to the gym yesterday - still need to work out a schedule that is back friendly. It will probably be light bag work, slightly modified kata and maybe some upper body weights (any other suggestions welcome)!
Went for a 20 minute walk instead and did some stretches and gentle back exercises when we returned.

Thanks MMX. I've been doing a similar one to this, raising one arm and one leg. Also been doing the piriformis stretch Meguro posted, cobra, bridge and cat stretches.

Dojo trainingIt's only been a week since my last training session but it feels like longer! We started with kihon; 20 each of strikes and blocks, everyone moved onto kicks while I repeated the strikes. The benches were brought out to give the other guys something to kick over to help with form. It looked pretty knackering but still fun and I wanted to join in! We did a little partner work next - hiki kazushi and mawashi geri, then hiki mawashi and hiza geri - working on getting your partner onto their toes and off balance. The main exercise of the class was kata based. 4 of us stood at north, south, east and west and performed the kata attacks, while one was in the middle performing the kata. We took it in turns to go from white to green belt kata. The final bit of fun was a quick game of British Bulldog and I could tell from my poor aching lungs that I'm really going to have to work on my fitness again when my back is better! It was a small class tonight due to work/exam commitments but (apart from not being able to kick) I really enjoyed it.

Morning, good people. It's a beautiful day, the sun is shining and it's time for another Saturday morning write-up! Slightly different bag work this morning; in pairs or threes, one held the bag, one jogged and one worked the bag for five 45 second rounds. We started off at 50% and increased the intensity for the final rounds. We then did some takedown work and focussed on getting into position 3 and 4 for the angles. Kata followed, with one in the middle and the others at the points of the compass to do the attacks. Monty and I had a go at brown belt kata (first time I've ever done it with an opponent). Main message for me: get the ****ing angles right, Ros! ;D We finished up with an interval that didn't seem to be Tabata timing but was something similar - maybe 40 s on and 20 s off. Oh and by the way, has anyone seen my stamina? It seems to have disappeared. Send it home if you see it, tell it I'm missing it! ;D

You'll get it back soon enough. Once you've 'been there' the body soon re-adapts. Gary

Yeah a bit of my stamina took a wild ride too Ros! That is why I am working on some more conditioning lately.
