MilkManX has asked me if i would do a post about my kickboxing experience , not sure how to go about this but here goes- basically fought a bunch of nobodies about 20years ago to win and retire undefeated (13-1-1) as the super heavy weight British champion of a minority sport that no one really knew about. it was high kick rules, also known as American rules, that i competed under back then. much prouder of my students who have mainly fought under C class MT rules and only one points loss so far ;D happy to answer (if i'm able) any kickboxing related questions that you want to ask me. OSU!

Thanks Wullie!
What was your training like back then?
How does that compare to now?
How has your methodology transferred to your students now that are competing?
What are things your stress to your students that will go on to compete?
;D

Thanks Wullie! What was your training like back then? How does that compare to now? How has your methodology transferred to your students now that are competing? What are things your stress to your students that will go on to compete? ;D well back then it all seemed easier (oh to be 20 again!) lol! i trained myself back then as i'd split away from the freestyle club i used to co-run to concentrate on the full contact side of things. my training used to be a 6 day split routine of weights, bagwork and more bagwork. about the only 'sparring' i got in was while working the doors. i really enjoy having a trainer (Senshido) to work me for tournaments, fighting knockdown is something i really like as its a big challenge because it takes my main weapon, the left hook to the head, out of the game and the pace of the fights are quite different. had to change my methodology of 'HULK SMASH' to suit the students and get more technical also learning more skills to be able to let the guys compete on a 'level' playing field with all the different rule sets on the go just now. what do i stress to my students? keep your chin down and your guard up lol!

I'm impressed you trained yourself, I bowed out of a few fights because I was more or less training myself at one point. I had a great offer for a full Thai rules fight against somebody and actually attempted to train for it but just started a MT program so it was hard training and teaching my new students. I even attempted to get a couple of them to hold pads for me but it wasn't at the level I needed for the fight so I bowed out early but I did the promoter a favor and found a replacement for me more then a month before the card so it worked out. I dunno, I just never felt I could train myself for a ring fight adequately enough LOL. Wullie, who did you have work your corner for your kickboxing fights, your brother Senshido? Osu!

It was only high kick rules, I was used to points continuous and could hit hard so it wasn't that big a step.
Senshido lived in Wales back then, but some of the fights weren't too far from him so he came over and helped me with those, other than that it was a couple of mates with a bucket, towel and water bottle lol!

Forgot to mention that I was trying to get my kickboxing club up and running, and you cant expect to get people to train kickboxing under you unless you've done a bit.
