if thats the joy they get from the MARITAL ARTS LESSON, let them have it, but refuse entry to a real dojo!! lol! Not sure if we'd get more or less students in the dojo if we started lessons in marital arts! ;D

Started a bad week in my training. Monday I missed kickboxing and BJJ classes...worked late. Tuesday missed Seido karate classes...worked late. Wednesday missed Seido karate class...family obligations. Today I normally would goto Dashaa MMA karate, but lately in Seido I've learning a lot of new syllabus (yakusoku kumite, kihon kumite, 3 katas, 1-step self-defense) so my gut says I should goto Seido to work on retaining those.

My favorite kata is probably Kanku-Sho, though I'm not very good at it. I enjoy Bassai as well. It's always interesting to watch someone really good, because each move just looks so different. While kata may not really translate well into kumite, kumite does seem to translate somewhat into kata.

I don't really train Kata as much but my favorite ones were Sochin and Empi(Enpi).
Nowadays if I practice Kata it is more of a warmup or just to dust off the old Karate knowledge.
I am fascinated by some of the techniques within the Jiyu Ippon Kumite of Kancho Kanazawa and how they might apply in Muay Thai.

While kata may not really translate well into kumite, kumite does seem to translate somewhat into kata. That's something I can agree with. Seems like too many people in some other styles of karate focus too much on kata and not enough on kumite. Meh, I'm sure even there are some in knockdown karate dojo that focus more on kata but I'm sure it's far less then in a shotokan dojo, etc. However, there are ways to train kata and apply it in kumite but not many people seem to do it...or often enough. Osu!

As for katas, I feel like practice make permanent. You defend and counter, defend and counter, repeatedly. If you do these things enough, if you are attacked the muscle memory kicks in and you defend and counter. Works with kumite too, block and counter. The movements seem to be exaggerated, but when we fight we shorten them up.
I actually like kata when we can go at a natural pace rather than by count

Yeah, I'm resurrecting a old thread, but just for a short time, I promise. I took my first Tai Chi Chuan, chuan being the martial applications aspect of the old folks dance known as Tai Chi. Anyway, the instructor taught the first few moves and explained what they were supposed to be. After class I asked when we'd be drilling those applications, . . . nothing but the sound of crickets. I may give this club more leeway, as I'd like to learn more about the stick and knife fighting part of the curriculum. I think I'll have to give up any hopes of contact sparring though. Anyway, back to the Tai Chi. Here's a bit of info on Tai Chi Chuan as it relates to Mas Oyama, Kyokushin, and Kata. www.taikiken.org/Make sure to check out the Taikiken profiles on Sawai, Mas Oyama, Royama kancho. Here's a bit on the influence of Taikiken in Hagime Kazumi's karate. taikiken.blogspot.com/2006/12/hajime-kazumi.html

Ahh yes. I read that many moons ago. Interesting stuff. They have a bit about that in the Mas Oyama fictionalized Manga/Movies too.( the Sonny Chiba ones not the Korean Fighter in the Wind)

I used to be a member of a Shotokan forum (me, a Kyokushin guy ranting about bunkai, oh the irony), when Jesse joined to introduce his blog to the members. I was then, as now a big promoter of the idea of throws in kata and sanchin dachi being more than just a stable platform. Most of the Shotokan guys were resistant to such views. They were quite happy with jump and spin in the air bunkai, confident that these moves would pay-off in the street.
