I say Karate for all, some want to test themselves others are happy to be fitter and more able to look after themselves but hope they never have to find out just how fit they are.
Kumite is a good test of how ready you are to face the reality of a confrontation, the adrenaline and panic that saps your energy faster than you could ever allow for t I am a fan ;D. Clearly there are other ways to test and prep this but kumite is a useful tool.
I think if you have no semi contact alternatives for people to use as either a way to build up to knockdown or to stay sharp on the way into old age you will have an issue as many of you know knockdown training takes dedication to a whole new level and the average student will feel there is a large gap between themselves and the 'fighters' in the dojo and in many ways this closes rather than expands the pool rather than increases it.

What a great day! Some good up and coming fighters showing loads of spirit. I've got loads of photos, and I know Monty has too, which will be getting posted when I get home. What really made it for me was young Mark Welsh from Senshido's class won the lightweight section, first fight his opponent couldn't take anymore and retired, he won his second with a beautiful jodan mawashi KO, and in the final, which for me was the best fight of the day as Kevin is a really good technical fighter with devistating body punches (he'd won one of his earlier fights with a thunderous body shot that dropped his opponent for the ippon) it was a cracking final with both fighters taking and loosing advantage with some devistating punishment given out and taken by Mark and Kevin, it could have gone either way but unfortunately Kevin hurt his foot and couldn't continue leaving Mark as the winner. Well done everyone! Was great to see Ros, Monty, GJEC, Alan and TMD there as well and I hope they will post their thoughts on the day.

You should be, he's got all the tools to be really good.
I enjoyed the day, although (sign of my age) my hips are playing up now from the long drives. Thanks for the hospitality and we'll hope to enter next year.

Nice pictures Monty, but You realise Wullie is now an outcast in his own community and will only be able to pop home for supplies in the hours of darkness ... Never mind Wullie. If all else fails you can move south of the wall Gary
