My female student that prompted me to start this thread is starting to kiai in kata, kihon, and when I count to "ju." Seems like a small thing but makes me happy that I don't have to question if I should or should not pass someone on a grading if they don't kiai. This is a question that I still think of from time to time. I know some will say "kiai isn't that important" but to me, it sort of is. I'm not sure exactly why, maybe it's because I've always had a loud kiai? At gasshuku or shiai I've been to my kiai has been one of the loudest that causes people to look at me..even when I was a teen. No, I don't scream like a Woman or like I just saw a ghost but I have a very loud kiai which I've intimidated people with, believe it or not. I'll take any little edge I can get when it comes to fighting! With that being said, I would not let a student of mine to get to brown or black under me that doesn't kiai. Not even sure if I would allow them to get to blue (first kyu grade under me). Osu!
