Last weekend I went and fought in the battle in the desert tournament. A small but fun tournament in the middle of nowhere. Any feedback would be accepted, good and bad. I am the "little" guy with hair. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGonHS0aux8&feature=relatedA few things I learned/realized: 1)It is hard when you are the biggest in class and you fight someone who outweighs you. (I am not that big 6' 205#) 2)I have pretty good stamina (this fight was at elevation 5,000 feet and I train at 500 feet). 3)I use my hands to set my opponent up for range. Hands up (especially right hand) 4)I did not want his tree trunk legs hitting me, so i used my arms to often to assist in defending. 5)Need to generate more power in my shita tsuki. 6)I got sweep clean off my feet, ugh. Also, I heard the other fighters coach (the women you hear yelling) more than my own. Good I suppose as I knew what he was supposed to be using. Maybe I was working to nullify those techniques.

Thanks for posting.. I've never seen a round fighting area before! yes, I think you should maybe work on generating more power in your techniques, so you can hurt the big guys, get more body weight in them, although you were hitting him with plenty, it wasn't having the desired effect.

Osu, thanks senshido. The lines you see aren't really the area, they used a wrestling mat and they did not add a square. Had to use your instinct to know the boundary. lol.
I asked about the body shots, he said they were good, he just likes to take em to start out. I kept using them to tire out the stomach to drop the hands. It worked the last 30-45 seconds his hand were at his waist. (or at least I am going to take some credit for them dropping)

Was this tournament thrown by the AKKO? Just my own curiosity since Lane is AKKO and it seemed like he was more of the "home town" favorite in the fight...by the people cheering for him. Never mind, I do see that the tournament was thrown by the dojo your opponent trained under! I half questioned the center judge's judging the first couple of minutes but you got the win over that org's fighter! What I think worked in your favor was Lane tired out more than you did. You were both fighting toe to toe..squared up with each other so basically whomever tires out first or gets hurt first, loses. Nothing wrong with that if it works for you. I would have been moving off his center and working a lot of gedan mawashi geri for a minute to slow him down more. Combination of lack of mobility plus being tired sets him up for the jodan geri of your choice. I liked that you were using your hands to set up your kicks! I also like that you're a southpaw since I am, too! Could have slammed your left gedan mawashi geri into the inside of his leg . Shoulda, woulda, coulda...easy for all of us to say "what one should do." Were clinches/grabbing allowed? I saw one awkward moment where you removed his arm from around you, couldn't help but notice it because it was kind of slow. I think you did good especially considering you probably don't fight many people that fight like he fought. Osu!

Great fight! I didn't know any of the folks from this forum would be there, since there wasn't any chatter about the tournament.

I think Po1 nails it but also there were some chances you had for some great sweeps and even inside thigh kicks (uchi momo geri).
I know it was more of gassed out but you also dropped your hands a bit more than I would like to see.
Osu!

I agree with P01 that a bit of cicular movement wouldnt have gone amiss, especially when fighting a heavier opponent. When I started fighting I was pretty much a toe to toe fighter, and had to try to get out of the habit. Having said that, I take my hat off to anyone who steps up and has a go... very well done! Osu!

Being over 30, over 40 and still competing! Why???!! It's usually not for any money and if anything you're paying to compete. Maybe there are those that love to fight? Those that want to be able to fight without getting in any legal trouble? I know more people that don't fight than those that do. For the few that step up and compete, I say "Osu!" Osu!

Ok, figured I'd ask before posting because on other boards I'd get chased out of town for having an opinion. In the IKO (all factions), you bow the head table first, then to the shushin, then to the other fighter. For some reason AKKO does the other fighter first, shushin then head table? ? The side judges were not very active and didn't know the correct calls. I saw a bunch of instances where chui should have been called but wasn't. The side judges were not vey decisive, like when the wazari was called. Some of them had a delayed reaction (I wouldn't have called that ashi buri as wazari myself). The shushin doesn't know the correct calls. At the beginning of that match you say "hajime" but everytime the match stopped and reset he would say "hajime" again. That doesn't make sense because the match had already started. At the end when he called for Hantei he still has to count the flags even though there's wazari. It's the responsbility of the side judges to keep track of wazari, chui and genten. At 1:53 of the video, shiro is awarded wazari (don't agree with the call but whatever). At 5:25 the shushin calls for hantei and aka is declared the winner by wazari?? How did that happen? If I was the shiro fighter I would be upset.

This was scheduled as a two round fight, so most of the intermission is cut out (1 minute), So what you see is Shiro conceding the match. That is why the flags and signaling at the end does not make sense.
Most of the judges did not a lot of knockdown judging experience. There were some mistakes made, but they were consistent in there calls and rulings for the entire day. Good or bad. For that I give them credit, and most of them were judging as instructed. Some of the calls I did not like, but the only way to avoid that is to win in the first 30 seconds, game over, which I did not do.
There are not that many really good Shushin or Fukushin.
