Before I begin let me state I'm not a pot head and I would pass any drug test given to me. With that being said I'm no angel, neither.
I personally know a fair amount of very good martial artists and more then a few of them are martial artists that make a good living from teaching martial arts and a few even by fighting, etc. that are "pot heads"...somebody that smokes marijuana on a somewhat regular basis.
For whatever reason I was "blind" to this until I was about 21 I started seeing it more and more.
What are some of your thoughts on this? Osu!

OSU, I don't want to deal with you if you are under the influence in class. Outside of class, so long as it doesn't interfere with life or cause a danger to others, that's the person's choice, though I don't hang around pot heads. I don't really blame someone for using it once in a while to deal with pain- I mean, people take vicodin too, you know? That stuff can also mess you up. I don't think nearly as much tragedy is caused by pot as it is by alcohol. But I don't want it in the person's system when I'm training with them- doesn't exactly make your senses sharp, you know? As for me, I'm allergic to the stuff. Cannot breathe around it, cannot eat it in a cookie either. Too bad, since it is supposed to help with PTSD a lot, actually. Nowadays though I don't even like to take my ativan on a training day- I want to stay sharp and focused, for both myself and for my classmates. All it takes is being "off" just a bit, and someone gets badly hurt.

Never tried drugs. Two friends from school were heavily into pot (well it was the 60's) and they were right twats. Enough to put me off for life.

I cant see being under the influence of anything in the dojo. However, I dont do anything drink or drugs........not saying that I never did, but as I have gotten older I feel all these things make me feel worse!! And who needs that!!

I mentioned somewhere else that i tried "ultimate orange" which turned out to be full of ephydrine, apart from that I've never tried any kind of drugs, I've never even tried a cigarette!!
I dont drink what you chaps across the water call hard liquor, just a few cold beers at the weekend

as somebody who has tried most things over the years i can say what people do in the privacy of their home if it`s not to the detriment of anybody else and it is not performance enhancing, i say let them get on with it.
when you are "training" with other people, that`s a different matter because in a training session to a certain extent, you rely on each other....and i would never have trained with anybody who i thought was under the influence, that includes steriods.
i have had to "deal" with somebody who had roid rage and it wasn`t very nice, i had them pinned and i wasn`t letting go, i didn`t want the police called because i knew him....went on for ages!
i have seen people being led into a private area during a tournament...just before a quarter finals in fact, i never did ask them outright, perhaps i should have done....the person concerned looked unaturally big (already on steroids?).....was he being offered speed/cocaine...who knows? THAT is wrong!!!!!
pot in my opinion makes one lethargic and layed back, causes long term paranoia.....hardly helping one`s karate career, so if they are doing it privately, so what!....as long as it doesn`t interfere with the dojo.
when you get a bit older you start to understand things in a different way. i would hate my son to ever dabble in drugs or cigarettes and when he gets old enough he will be getting the informed talk and i would be distraught if he ever got involved but you have to accept when people are adults they have choices.
i now have this vision of somebody taking kihon stoned! ;D
so, privately o.k
dojo no!

I'd rather not have to deal with that. There was a gentleman that used to come to the dojo "straight from the pub" and he would agitate me to no end; by the time I figured out why he was so damn agitating (he made no attempts to hide the fact that he'd had a few) he stopped coming to class.
As far as my dojo goes, not in my dojo. OSU!

I don't think I have ever seen people train high that I'm aware of but I brought this up because I know of a lot of martial artists and even pro fighters that smoke pot together...
It's very prevalent in the BJJ world and I don't mean to stereotype but it's just the truth. Osu!

P01........ I have seen this first hand at a gym I trained at in Jersey City. The BJJ and Boxers usually got high together in the parking lot....or around the corner at the White Castle after training. I never gave much thought to it save for the fact that a few of them were on the job (police Officers) I dont know if "they" were indulging, but they all hung around each other when the pot heads went to go "BURN".

New a good knockdown fighter who was prescribed pot from his pediatrician. Reason being, he was a fighter and apparently it was like prescibing pain pills. Too bad for this guy, it turned out to be his gateway drug. The last time I saw him fight, he was late for weigh- ins due to toking up.

A loaded subject.
Anyway, it would depend on the person really. A recreational user, who can and does function in class, no problem. An addict is different, an not usually someone who would show to class. In my formative karate years (in a college town), the age range for the dojo was 18-22yo college students. The Spicoli's (Movie: Fast Times at Ridgemont High) were not the type of pot smokers who would show up to class.
I have trained with smokers of the marijuana. If they are active type of people they can be completely functional in class. In fact I have know a few who would be at class after toking up, but they were usually the hardest workers in class. When they advanced to where they could lead class, they also were good instructors. Influenced or not. They did not come to class "high" all the time, but on occasion they did. Most people did not know. But these are also people you would typically have respect for after class as well. If you met them on the street you would not suspect them as pot smokers.
My Sensei looked the other way if it did not disrupt class, he would tease them if he knew, and try to get them to do something stupid so he could laugh.
Now alcohol is a totally different thing. No way! Effects the body much differently.
