I get the odd email saying "It was simple in your day. When Kyokushin was united you could train with the top instructors"
So what's changed? I went to the best instructors I could find and they were happy to share their knowledge. Does that not happen today? I'm out the loop now but my advice is simple: If someone turns you away because you're in the 'wrong' group, I'd lose no sleep at all.

Just a guess, but I wonder if all of the "this guy doesn't do real Karate" and "that guy is just a phony" talk makes it hard for some people to decide which person/system to train under. For me, it's simply a matter of satisfaction with my training. I doubt my instructor is the best fighting coach etc., but doesn't the old adage say "no matter how good you are, somebody out there is better"? If I am satisfied with the results of my training, I will continue to train. When I become dissatisfied, I will seek other avenues.

There are some karateka who are also in the unfortunate position of having a sensei who would not be happy if they wanted to train with anyone else. Monty and I have met several people at seminars who had to keep their attendance 'secret'.

I know of one group who (very recently) instructed their members not to attend a seminar which was hosted by another group, so unfortunately this is still going on

Yes that is very true. Sad.
I know that when we host Seminars with Kancho Ninomiya it is open to any and all stylists.

It's a damn shame that some want to hold others back from experiencing all they can. I have not encountered that, nor did I consider it. I would have though with the numerous alliances, unions, etc. that this type of thing would be a non issue, but I'm guessing some people will never open their minds..

it is a non issue for most of us... unfortunately there is one group that I know of that actively discourages mixing :-(

I wasn't having a dig at any one or any group. It's up to us all as individuals to decide how much control we allow others to exert over us. Happily, in 42 years of training I never let anyone else decide who I could learn from. Gary

I'm with you on this Gary, I just can't understand the mentality of those that enforce such rules, or indeed follow them

Not to mention though when the tournaments are happening and they open it up to all groups. How many from different groups attend. Not to mention in Japan a friend of mine spoke with IKO1 as they were close to her place. They told her she wasn't allowed to train as she was not part of their org.

It's another MA thing ...
When my lads played football their coach was delighted if other coaches helped and was constantly encouraging the better ones to try for academies and selections for teams in higher leagues. He saw himself as a stepping stone and wanted the best for everyone he brought through.
Great attitude.

To all Kyokushin GB Honbu has stated against attending any other groups courses / Competitions Please think before attending, I have great respect for Shihans some close friends of other groups but will not attend there courses, I can only implement this in Scotland the rest of the UK must do what they will, Please think before acting on this.

yes, this is huge backward step in my book... nothing I didn't know already though The likes of Mark Kingsland who was promoting his event with all the other groups earlier this year must feel like he has been kicked in the nuts... oh and also according to Shihan Martin, its okay for other groups to attend IKO1 events, but they will not attend anyone else's!

Baffling, honestly. My Shihan has a thing against "dojo hopping" but I've had no trouble with going and "working out" at other dojos, or going to whatever tournament I want. We also let anyone who can be respectful come work out with us when they're in town, regardless of organization, and we let them wear their rank, too.
But we're small and we stay out of the big politics, so we can get away with that.
I've found that it's usually only the heads of these orgs who really want such draconian policies. Most of the students and lower-level instructors are happy to talk and share and work out together.
I mean, why be so insecure?
Next week I'm going to an IKO4 seminar, and then I'm going to go work out at an AKKO dojo. LOOK OUT I MIGHT BRING EVERYTHING TOPPLING DOWN! lol!
OSU!
