Last night in class, I taught "part 2" of a short intro to self defense for my class. As part of the class, I had them all write out 5 attacks with defenses and we'd review some of them in class.
I guess, I didn't do a good enough job of explaining what I expected the end result to be, based on some of the examples, but I was enlightened to this little gem:
"Person attacks trying to assault me sexually; I drop to the ground and defecate myself"
Now, the other adults in the room had heard this before class and were already trying to stifle their laughter; they all lost it when my facial expression changed.
As I gained the composure to ask "why" (I didn't laugh, but I found it really...REALLY hard to say anything), she added this gem:
"In the self defense class I took awhile back, that's what they told us to do; if someone tries to rape you, defecate."
I understand the logic behind it, however, it's short sighted in that someone who is already willing to harm you physically would have no problem beating you to a bloody pulp.
What's the craziest self defense that you've heard?

Going to a private "shito ryu" dojo and being asked to get in a fighting stance. Raise my hands up have my chin tucked down with my lead shoulder partially covering my face...was told that's a bad fighting stance and that I should stand with my feet shoulder width apart with my chin up high and my hands to my side so I don't look threatening.
My shock only lasted a few seconds before I told this "sensei" how wrong she was. I only wished I remained more calm and got to know more of the students so I could have talked some sense into them how bad this kroddy was.
However, being told to defecate as a part of self defense? LOL, they don't even teach that in SERE (military "survival school") school!
If I was captured as a POW and shit my pants not only would that make my life hell I don't think my hosts would be that happy with me as well...what's to stop a rapist from severely hurting someone they mean to rape if they just shit their pants? From my little understanding of the psyche of a rapist, they usually don't rape because of it being sexual, more about it forcing their will over somebody else. I can't imagine them just leaving a person alone because they shit their pants. I really get ticked off when somebody teaches bogus self defense methods that are only going to get somebody more hurt.
Hangtime, I think you won the most crazy self defense method and if not I'm very curious to see who can top yours.

That's what I told her. All that's going to do is make someone mad...not only that, you're on the ground, they'll just beat you senseless.
When we first covered S/D, I told them --Quick, Explosive and leading toward your escape; I guess the tip sounded so iron clad, it superseded my 3 criteria, lol.

The last time I had a serious teaching gig at a dojo was a dojo that tried to use these...well, I took part in their pressure point self defense and the only one I "tapped" to was pushing in my larnyx..not out of pain just because I don't want somebody poking in my throat too much LOL!!! They never did it again after this after they saw none of the pressure points really stopped me and I kind of explained to them that if you do kickboxing and knockdown kumite enough you get conditioned. With that being said I'm hoping there still is some pressure point dim mak expert out there that I could learn something from but I have yet to experience it for myself and I've doing martial arts since I was a boy. I also still hope there is some awesome Aikido dojo out there because the few years I put into it was not worth it for me. Osu! |

Everything works on a compliant opponent, especially if they're the type who wants to be impressed. Rule No 1: Don't try fancy stuff on anyone who hasn't bowed before it kicks off  Gary |

Pressure points are great... at p***ing someone off by doing something painful and annoying! Though some of them if you use enough leverage when your opponent is grabbing you can maybe get them to move back a bit. Maybe.

The only pressure points I teach are jamming thumbs into eye's from close quarters. Although there's no percussive effect I've had great feedback from people I've taught who then used them, in one case to foil an attempted rape. I never heard of the "poop yer pants"...  I guess the wildest self defense technique/demonstrated, is the hook kick to the head followed by a roundhouse. Without dropping the leg. Looks good on the screen, but I doubt it'll work well on the street. |

I thought it was a roundhouse to the head followed by the hook kick Either way, I have never seen neither ways as self defense but if they are that's ridiculous. Something I'd like to point out is, if somebody has a big blade out don't kick towards their hand holding said blade unless you want to bleed a lot. Yes, you might get lucky and knock the blade out of their hand but more times then not you're going to get slashed, and slashed (or stabbed) bad. "Drop to the ground and shit your pants!" I have actually heard the pantsshitting thing before, haha. When someone attempted to rape me about 10 years ago, I did not use this technique, instead choosing to grab him by his upper arms and slam his head into the wall until he stopped moving. Worked pretty well.
*edit* I did lose the security deposit on that apartment though. Something about some damage in the bedroom...

Sharp edges and walls are great weapons and something I advocate a lot in the "self defense" I teach. Probably not really legal, well hell, I know it's not legal, who am I fooling. Yes it was worth the loss of the deposit, and I'm glad for it. Too bad it wasn't an option when I was 7 years old.
Some people deserve no mercy from me. Rapists are some of those people. I grew up in a hard town, with a hard life, and I have bigger concerns than "is this strictly legal?"

Re: Pressure points: I've got to admit, I touched on the subject...ever so briefly...kinda. I was trying to get the class to think about "what hurts you, would likely hurt someone else" --the example I used was a "purple nurple"  "...and ladies, if you find yourself in...'that dangerous situation' (speaking around the 12 year olds), the same thing holds true for other parts of the male anatomy..." The other thing is, if someone has a hand on you, you know where it is...and presumably, you still have 2 free. "Thanks for the hand up " -------- That sucks Ev. Sorry to read that Ev. Child abuse is the worst type of betrayal.
It's a fact that physical fitness alone doesn't make people mentally tough. That comes through overcoming adversity and over time realising that no matter what happens, you'll never lie down and quit.
Some people find that resilience the nice way - through challenging training - and some get it through bitter experience. The important thing is to harness it - however you found it - and make it a strength you can rely on.
