There are some weird belt systems about and it gets confusing. To help all GENUINE knockdown and sabaki karate-ka know the comedians I invite you to add your styles belt system here:
ENSHIN
Blue, Yellow, Green, Brown (two kyu grades at each level)
Black (Red embroidery with red bars for dan grades)

LOL, I like it, I played about with my belt system as I'm independent. As I'm from different schools I decided to mix the belt systems together.
It orginally followed the same as yours Gary as with Ashihara and Kyokushin but thought "this looked nice" (the junior system has > Brown White stripe > Brown 2 White Stripes > Black 1 White Stripe > Black 2 White stripes)
Kyu Grades Red > Purple > Blue > Yellow > Orange > Green > Brown > Brown Red Stripe > Brown Black stripe
Dan Grades Black (any colour embroidery no Dan Bars - can be worn throughout the karateka's career) > Red and Black Block (any embriodery - to distinguish time served grades - not compulsary except on internal gradings/seminars)

I'm all for keeping things simple. Enough to give incentive but not a fashion parade.
Black and red block belts? Never heard of them in the knockdown styles.

I have 10th & 9th kyu Red 8th & 7th kyu Blue 6th & 5th Kyu Yellow 4th & 3rd Kyu Green 2nd & 1st Kyu Brown Black belts with Orange embroidery and gold bars
I've never heard of the Black & Red block belt full stop. I have seen red & white block although, but as Gary says, never seen either in a knockdown style.

Sorry I know, it's a personal thing, I'm a Manchester City Fan and it's representative of the retro Man City Away Strip, of Red and Black stripes.
The belt itself is an actual belt used in Jujitsu and Kempo.

I notice a conspicuous absence of the plain ol' white belt. What gives, guys?

Meguro - In ENSHIN and KYOKUSHIN we're white belts until we start climbing the greasy pole.
Ken - you're kidding us. Football away strip? What happens if a Man U fan joins?

Our club (bkk) is as Senshido's but I am old enough to remember the original bkk colours, white for 10th & 9th, blue 8th & 7th, yellow 6th & 5th, green 4th & 3rd etc. Wonder why they changed it? perhaps because years ago a new starter stayed as white belt for 9 months? (presuming 3 month intervals) osu yann

The cynical answer is that the colours changed from white for 10 / 9th kyu to red at about the same time that one of the larger groups started selling embroidered belts for kyu grades. Simple mathematics. Low grades are the biggest group. But I don't want to be cynical Gary

Good luck with that - serious or not I've never even thought of a grand poobah belt in Leicester Tigers colours. An opportunity missed ... Gary

at the kickboxing club i run it's White 10th Kyu when you first step on the mat, then 9th Kyu Yellow, 8th Orange, 7th Green, 6th Blue, 5th Purple, 4th Red, 3rd Plain Brown, 2nd Brown with Black stripe, 1st Kyu half Brown/Black then Black embroidered with persons name and dan bar/s one end (right hand end when worn) and the club name on the other in yellow/gold, the club supplies the belts as the students pass grades

Given the opportunity to assign color to a kyu, would you use the same color scheme? I've read some explanations for the color for kyu grades in Kyokushin. Then there is the story of the white belt getting dirty hence the colors.

I don't believe a word of the legends but I do think the knockdown styles would be well advised to keep similar systems that seperate them from points and McDojo.

Gary, thanks would love to see you in a tigers belt (they do a nice camo belt too). The Black and Red block is there to distinquish technical grades and timeserved grades nothing more and its only for Gradings and internal seminars is where it would be worn. I have a plain black belt with the stripes on for attending external seminars etc.
I can understand the colours of the belts as my original white belt is yellowed through sweat and time etc so its possible.
I'm not sold on the "theatrical" reasons behind the colours of the belts though like they do in some Korean arts etc.
The main reason I have Red and Purple as beginner grades is because if a previously trained martial artist say purple belt (4th Kyu in Wado, Shotokan and Shukokai) starts training they will feel confortable wearing a purple belt even though its not at the same level in my club)
It also thows a few cats amongst the pigeons too
