LOL You'd have done the same.
"I see you've dropped the self-defence from your website. I think combat sport is great but it doesn't work in the street"
"Yep, you are absolutely right. That's why weightlifters can't move furniture and why rugby players can't run for a bus. I suppose shotputters couldn't punch their way out of a wet paper bag and cricketers wouldn't be able to swing a chair at someone ..." "I mean sport is too SPECIFIC to be useful, right?"
"Are you being sarcastic?"
"Yes I am. I'm going training now, so I'll leave you eating your donuts and dreaming about 'applications'".
"No need to be like that!"
"There's every need. You're a C***"

It must be me. I'm a dinosaur. Training today was lifting big heavy weights above my head, some sprints, then imagining a face on the bag and trying to punch / kick it hard enough to rip it off the ceiling. Funnily enough, pretty much exactly what I was doing 30 years ago although I now call it combat sport instead of Budo. I dare say a lot of 'jutsu' martial artists do something very similar while the 'do' crowd are looking for secrets. Gary PS Wouldn't it be funny if they discovered a text - something like an Okinawan 'Dead Sea Scroll' - that proved beyond all doubt that kata was first taught to people to STOP them bothering their instructors while they were throwing rocks, sprinting and hitting makiwara. "What now master? I have painted the fence and sanded the floor thrice already" "OK, you're annoying me now. Bugger off and practise that war dance I showed you. I've got some rocks to throw and a makiwara I want to try and break ..."

Haha, OSU, I am starting to think that's half the point of kata too. "Ugh, I'm tired," or "Pleh, not enough people showed up..." KATA DAY!

Maybe there's nothing mystical there at all.
Most sports require a degree of GPP before the specialised stuff starts, so maybe they were just used (originally) to build a base of fitness and coordination before they started throwing rocks, sprinting and breaking makiwara.
It always reminds me of Shakespeare. For year after year students are asked to find the hidden meanings in his plays. Maybe there was none, he just wrote whatever he thought would keep people amused and would be laughing his tits off now if he thought Universities would be using them to 'educate' people.

Maybe the best teachers don't search for anything hidden but help the student understand the archaic language so that they can start to understand the meaning of the play? Some connection with kata after all?

Maybe ... But do we want to look forwards or backwards? Meanings that made perfect sense in Elizabethan England don't often inspire the youtube generation. As for knockdown karate, we're up against MMA and RBSD now. Do we need to figure out what a little old chap - in a fishing village on a tiny island - really meant by an intricate move, 150 years ago? Personally, I think the future lies in making training direct, uncomplicated and strong. But I may be wrong. Time will tell. Gary

For example, here's a list of popular culture that takes references just from Hamlet: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/References_to_HamletLooking forwards is good while at the same time remembering that there's nothing new under the sun!

Fair point, well made.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the study of Shakespeare (or kata) is worthless for it's own sake. I mean, I love studying the Greeks and the Romans etc without ever thinking it will change my life. But for most knockdown karate-ka they'll do better if they power up and stick to a fairly tight but extremely effective skill set.
The chap I was talking to in the cafe that started this rant was an ex student of mine that was lazy and couldn't handle contact. But he was waxing lyrical about the benefits of kata. I should've known better, but after 5 minutes of politely listening to him telling me how effective it all was, I just couldn't take the pain ...

Never pass up the opportunity to call a **** a ****. ;D Maybe I can make that the new Montgomery motto?

Found out that the bloke that runs the boxercise (he says it's actual boxing) classes at the local leisure centre has been telling folk that I teach my students the wrong way to punch. One of my students went along to try it out, got slagged off by the instructor for hitting the pads too hard with his jab, you're only meant to flick it out it as it's not meant to do damage!!!

I have heard that opinion before.
I was always taught that it was a lead and a feeler but that it was also capable of good hits.
