Like I always say ...

Saturday TrainingWe started off with 5x1 minute rounds on the heavy bag, focusing on angle changes. Then we got into twos with a kick shield and chose three techniques to do. 20 off each side and only ones that were getting good impact were counted. I chose reverse punch, knee kick and low kick. I was happy with my punches and picked up a few tips on the other techniques: drive the tip of the knee in to direct the force into the opponent and swing the arm down more for the low kicks. The focus for the next few weeks is going to be on our 3rd dan prospect, so he was in the middle to perform each kata against us doing the attacks. I have to say I learnt a lot from watching him being corrected, so it's beneficial for us all. I had the last move on black belt kata and the impish part of me was happy to have taken him down three times, heh heh. ;D Not a killer today, but as I said, very helpful for different reasons. Oh, I also have to mention that the same impish part of me now has a vision of Gary rotating on a Pole! ;D ;D

A slightly delayed write-up of last night's training, as the laptop got displaced due to a furry companion (feel free to insert your own joke).
After the warm-up we moved onto the basics. Twenty of all the strikes and blocks and the kicks were done as a 5-kick sequence, alternating legs for each kick. Not sure how many we did in total, let's just say lots. Then we did 20 mawashi geri/ushiro mawashi kake geri combos.
We got into pairs with a set of pads between us and took it in turns to do 10 good mae geris off each leg, 10 good mawashi geris and 5 good ushiro geris. Although neither leg seems particularly good to me for ushiro geri, the left leg felt far more powerful than the right.
Some new pads made an appearance, some teeny, tiny focus mitts and we did several rounds of indexed strikes on those.
We got into threes and one person was reacting to attacks while the other two alternated the attacks.
Finished off with three rounds of sparring and I still find it hard to try out anything different.
So, there we are. We were all very upset that we didn't have time for a finisher ( ;D) but we were all pretty knackered by that point anyway.

Finished off with three rounds of sparring and I still find it hard to try out anything different. There's no need to Ros, most of the indexing drills are for SP and I doubt you'd be thanked for repeated shotei to the jawline ... Just keep doing what you're doing, what feels 'right' for you. Over time you'll self-select what you believe in and that's the key thing. "A little proof is all the faith you'll ever need" Gary

I said I'd try to do the write-up last night so Monty could see what we did but I had to have a shower and then chillax with Perkin, sorry! After the warm-up - 5 minutes speedplay, followed by some dynamic stretching - we did 20 reps of the kihon kicks and 100 mawashi geris. We followed that up with a few rounds of mawashi geri/ushiro mawashi kake geri over a partner's head. Then the black belts held a variety of pads (sabaki pads, kick shields, teeny tiny focus mitts) with a different technique at each station: mawashi geri, shotei or punch, inside low kick, outside low kick. We spent a minute at each station and had to do 5 good ones before rotating. The black belts then had a go while the rest of us held the pads. Did I mention how much I like hitting pads? ;D We got into pairs again for some partner work: different rounds of long-range attacks and mid-range attacks, while the other defended and then followed that up with a few rounds of sparring. Scored zeros and ones (a point for each target got out of head, middle or unbalanced) as per. Not sure I'll ever get anyone's head, so it'll be a Red Letter Day if I ever even score 2! A finisher of 30 press-ups, 30 sit-ups, about 80 squat kicks. Note to self: if you do a lunge and squat heavy workout on a Tueday, these are gonna hurrrttt! ;D Normal timely write-ups will resume imminently as Monty is home today! Hooray!

Ros is too modest (or knackered) to write about it, but she did a great job last night earning her brown belt.
Rather than a clearly defined syllabus or a set routine, we just did a 'normal' session and told the candidates to impress us, either through skill or spirit.
Having a vague benchmark and no shouting or whipping in, we just let the candidates put in their best effort. I expected a few to coast along and was ready to hold them back, but everyone tried.
I was especially pleased for Ros. As mentioned on Monty's thread she has had a few setbacks and health problems, but trained regularly - even when she didn't feel great.
Maybe that's the key. The ones who succeed take things in their stride that others use as a convenient excuse. They turn up even when they don't feel like it, knowing that that is making them mentally stronger.
Well done Ros! We're all proud of you!

Well I had no doubts about that. I agree Gary. Its the ones that show up rain or shine and put in the effort.

So, 2 weeks into sensible eating and 7 pounds lighter! The weekdays that I'm not in the dojo (Tues, Wed, Fri) I have been doing a new Wii workout disc that I bought. This one's quite good and helps to keep me focussed. I did an initial 'fitness assessment' and then it works out my routines - do I have to start at light, moderate or challenging levels? No, I have to start at the 'hard' level! 30 minutes yesterday and I was soaking wet and absolutely knackered so the cardio is definitely working. Unfortunately, it wants me to lose 20Kg so we'll see how that goes!

That's great, Ros! Good luck on the next 20 kgs. I guess the Holy Grail is to get sensible, delicious, and filling to intersect.

I think I'll aim to lose around 10-12Kg - if I lost 20Kg I would weigh about 60Kg which I think is a bit thin for my height and build! I've got sensible, delicious and filling down pretty well - the only trouble is that rubbish, delicious and filling calls really loudly (I've got my metaphorical earplugs in at the moment ;D)
