Enshin Kaikan www.enshin.comFounded in 1988 by Kancho Joko Ninomiya. 1978 All Japan Champion and former US Chief Instructor of Ashihara Kaikan. Kancho Ninomiya decided in 1988 that he wanted to follow his own path after learning so much from his teacher Hideyuki Ashihara. Enshin emphasizes positioning and counters using what is called Sabaki. The Kihon is very similar to most other Karate styles. The Kata is Jissen or "fighting" Kata. Not based on any classical forms. Kumite involves striking, throws and take downs. Kancho Ninomiya is constantly testing new techniques and adding them to Enshin. There is a yearly tournament held in Denver USA. The World Sabaki Challenge. Any fighter can enter and compete as long as they are of a Blackbelt level in their style. Throws and take downs are not only allowed but encouraged.

Yes it is Mitch. I notice that most Enshin people are happy and glad to be part of their dojo. Says something about the standards. Osu!

More on Enshin Sabaki Techniques...
Newer Sabaki Techniques that I am working on.
Spinning Lifting Throw aka Tsurikomi Nage.
Kinda tricky at first but I seem to be getting the hang of it. Anyone else done this or have any tips?

I don't represent Enshin which is obvious to any of you that know me. However, I've been around the style, and tournaments over the years but I don't want to talk about something if I'm wrong.
I know of 3 former Enshin branch chiefs that got into training and/or training fighters for Muay Thai and MMA that are no longer with Enshin for various reasons.
I bring this up because I saw somebody who's dream is to fight in K-1 and to represent Enshin doing so. I more or less said I think his chances would be easier to get with a credible kickboxing gym because I doubt Kancho Ninomiya will back an Enshin dojo having pro kickboxers represent the Enshin style but did tell him to ask a branch chief to ask Kancho Ninomiya.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not slamming Enshin by any means, I personally think the style is great but if somebody's goal is to fight in the K-1 max or grand prix I want to tell them what I know is the easiest way to get there.
Thoughts from the Enshin stylists on here? Osu!

I would say for sure if they want to do K-1 that they should train at a gym that works toward that goal.
They can still be in Enshin but overall I think Kancho cares little for other sports than Enshin Karate tournaments.

Thanks for the answer MMX!
I am kind of walking on egg shells with this one because I didn't want to tick off my Enshin stylist friends. I have had some weird connections to Enshin over the years which MMX knows of, not a big deal but kind of weird and have a lot of respect for the style.
If Vernon Owens didn't leave Enshin I probably would be training under him at the old Seattle dojo! Osu!

I think as MilkmanX said Kancho is just totally focussed on Enshin. He feels the sabaki rules are a realistic and challenging test for stand-up fighters, so I can just imagine the look he'd give anyone who said he wanted to 'move up' to K1 ...
My suggestion to your friend would be to win the Sabaki Challenge first, then approach Kancho from the perspective of promoting Enshin on the K1 circuit. I couldn't say whether that would gain Kancho's approval but it might be worth a shot.

He's not a friend of mine just somebody I saw posting on K4L asking for advice on how to get to K-1. I told him more or less the easiest route would be to go to the closest kickboxing gym with connections to K-1 and experience training K-1 fighters and/or world pro title belt holders in kickboxing/muay thai.
If somebody wanted to become a world Sabaki challenge champion I would also tell them the easiest route would be to find the closest Enshin dojo and train LOL.
It's not impossible to come from an "outside" dojo or kickboxing gym without the connections but I was giving what I thought was the easiest way to accomplish that kind of goal. Osu!

Ahh ... I saw him.
It's great to have ambition but if I was him I wouldn't get too bogged down in the details until I'd gone as far as possible in my chosen system.
If his eventual destination is K1 or UFC I wonder why he doesn't enrol at a suitable gym for that?

Seems like he has his heart set on some "dream" of being a Sabaki challenge champion and a UFC/K-1 champion.
Pat Smith kind of did this...it's bad history since he's now a convicted sex offender but he was a Sabaki champion (not an Enshin stylist) that fought int he early days of K-1 and even once beat Andy Hug but Hug did beat him very badly in their rematch! Osu!

Very interesting.
I've mentioned before my opinion that Kancho Ninomiya didn't just follow Ashihara when he split from Kyokushin, his ideas were an integral part of Ashihara karate's 'new' methods.
Thanks for posting!

I have good memories training at Hombu Dojo in Denver. I only went for about 8 months , but I learned a lot . Kancho is very old school and I don't think he would approve or suport a transition to K1.
