The uchi uke gedan barai running was hilarious LOL. Even better was the random gedan barai - probably done because it looks cool. But then again I think this is more of a martial arts choreography video rather than an actual shotokan kumite/technique video. I'm pretty sure you can find Shotokan kumite/technique clips that display the same "showmanship." It is consistent with a striking only/mostly mentality, where hand and feet movements not directly involved in striking are by default involved in supporting striking or dismissed altogether as art. If you review the clips on the arm bar and force couple you will notice zenkutsu dachi, Kake Ashi dachi and Kiba dachi, used along with various uke in takedowns and joint manipulation. Boxers and kick boxers strike and parry perfectly fine without the elaborate stances, transitions and arms all over the place gestures. Grapplers are the ones who utilize low stances and balance shifts, and seemingly complicated movements to control their opponents.

Of course - there are definitely Shotokan clips that involve showmanship - usually I just switch off from that kind of stuff. The elaborate stances are just there to teach principles & basics in movement/leverage/weight mechanics etc. Even boxers when they throw straights transition into something that looks extremely similar to zenkutsu dachi. The only real difference is that karate has named these principles & made it an issue to teach these basics - whereas in boxing you're taught the same things just no fancy name for them. Strikers definitely utilize low stances/balance shifts too! LOL it sounds as though you genuinely have a thing against Shotokan though!

LOL it sounds as though you genuinely have a thing against Shotokan though! Does it show? I know lots of Shotokan karateka, lovely people. Can't stand the institutional view on kata though. It made for interesting discussions when I used to moderate a Shotokan forum (a knockdown guy, talking about close fighting apps).
